Become a Member Online: faytechcc.edu/foundation/membership.aspx» ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT « When did you discover your passion for nursing? My grandmother was a patient at Duke University Medical Center when I was in elementary school, and witnessing the wonderful care that she received there inspired me to want to enter the health care eld. Why did you choose to attend FTCC for your education? I was an Honors graduate at Pine Forest Senior High School, and my high school counselor Mrs. Mildred McDade recommended the nursing program at Fayetteville Technical Institute (now FTCC) as an option for pursuing my nursing degree. Enrollment at FTCC allowed me to live at home and commute to class and clinicals in my local area. How did your experience in the FTCC Nursing program prepare you for the intensity of your current working environment? I completed FTCC's Associate Degree in Applied Science with a Nursing Major in two years. Needless to say, the course load and clinical training was intense—organization was crucial. I recall being enrolled in 21 credits one quarter e nursing program at FTCC prepared me with a very high level of theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise, and I am extremely fortunate to have received such a solid foundation upon which to build as I continued my education. What is your fondest memory as a student at FTCC? I really have two: One of my fondest memories was the capping ceremony where I received the second stripe on my nursing cap to signify that I was a senior student, soon to graduate the program And the second memory was how kind and supportive nursing instructor Ms. Pam Best (now James) was as I worked so hard to make an unoccupied bed in the clinical practice lab All of the instructors worked hard to ensure that the students were well-prepared when they completed the program. If you could give your younger self any advice, what would it be? I think I would give my younger self the same advice I received from my high school counselor, which in essence was to obtain all the education that you can before you start your family and other obligations come along that may present a challenge to you as you complete your degree. What else would you like to share with current FTCC students? I would advise all of the students pursuing their degrees and starting their nursing careers to nd a mentor or several mentors, who will be able to provide sage advice and wisdom as you make dierent decisions in your career. ese mentors can be formal or informal, but seek them out and be willing to listen and learn from what they have to share. is approach has been extremely benecial to me in my 30-year career as a registered nurse, and 20 years as a nurse educator. My career trajectory would not have been possible without the education I received at Fayetteville Technical Community College and the many mentors I have been privileged to know. 2014 – 2015 Annual Report 23 "My career trajectory would not have been possible without the education I received at Fayetteville Technical Community College and the many mentors I have been privileged to know." — Dr. Voncella McCleary-Jones, Fayetteville Technical Institute Alumni» 2014 ─ 2015 DONOR CIRCLES « Silver $50,000+ Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. omas R. & Elizabeth McLean Foundation, Inc.
