Short Scholars Program. We want to explain the history behind the program and talk a little bit about Mr. Robert Short and his legacy. We spoke with Mary Holmes, Executive Director of the Cumberland Community Foundation, to explain its namesake, Robert H. Short. The Q&A will also touch on the history of the dream that made Short a legacy leader.Could you tell us about the origins of the program? In 2011, CCF received a $10 million gift in the will of Robert H. Short. Mr. Short’s generous gift was directed to CCF’s Community Scholarship Endowment Fund, which is dedicated to college scholarships for Cumberland County students. These awards are based on financial need, academic performance, and community service. CCF’s board of directors decided that the scholarships from his gift would be awarded to three local colleges: FTCC, Fayetteville State University, and Methodist University, for the first three years, known as “Phase I.” In the third year, the board decided to extend Phase I to five years ending June 30, 2018. So far, the Robert H. Short/ Cumberland Community Foundation Scholars Program has awarded $2,377,000 to local students. FTCC received $235,000 WHAT MAKES DREAMS HAPPENMary Holmes shares the legacy of the Robert H. Short Scholars Program81FTCC ANNUAL REPORTWWW.FAYTECHCC.EDUin awards during the five years of Phase I. Mr. Short’s original $10 million gift to Cumberland Community Foundation has grown to $12,611,129. That is the power of endowment. His gift keeps on giving every year. In Phase II, about $500,000/year will be awarded by applications submitted directly to Cumberland Community Foundation. The details for Phase II were announced to the public in September 2018.Can you tell us why donating to students in Cumberland County is so important?Though he was very successful, he always regretted not attending college. He wanted to make it possible for kids like him who needed help going to college. He knew how family circumstances could take away op-portunities for young people. He wanted to open doors for students with potential who were hard workers like himself. Tell us a little about Mr. Short.Mr. Short’s story is impressive. He was born in Greensboro, NC and was one of six children. Short’s father died when he was only 15 years old, which forced him to drop out of school at 16 and go to work. Short served in combat during World War II and returned home in 1949 to work in the management program of Burlington Industries. He later relocated to Fayetteville and began working at Major Appliance Company which he later bought. During this time, Short completed home-study and night courses to achieve his High School Equivalency degree. Short described himself as “a poor child” from modest means.A successful businessman and a brilliant investor, he acquired his wealth through hard work, conservative living, and a successful self-designed investment strategy. He was a very generous philanthropist and gave a lot to education programs during his life. Robert H. Short just wanted to help kids go to college. Upon his death in 2011, that’s when the foundation received a generous bequest from his estate to continue his support for students.Cumberland Community Foundation is honored to help him make that happen through the Robert H. Short/Cumberland Community Foundation Scholars Program.Mr. Short said of those times, “The first life lesson I ever learned was about the power of education. My father had an intense interest in education. In fact, he taught mathematics in the evenings at a local school, and I attended many of those classes.”Robert Short invested in students so they could have a better life through education, and the Cumberland Community Foundation grants these funds for the same reason, honoring his wishes. When asked for his advice for today’s children, Short replied, “Form good habits. They’re just as hard to break as bad ones. And play by the rules – it makes life so much easier.”Mary, in your own words, how has the program impacted students for the good? There are many, very capable students who do not attend college due to lack of funding. Others take on tremendous amount of debt in order to finance their college educations. Still others start college but drop out due to financial uncertainty. Scholarships open doors to bright futures for those willing to work hard and help students stay on track towards graduation. Cumberland Community Foundation focuses on local students attending nearby colleges for the first five years. The Foundation hopes these students will graduate debt free, pursue careers locally, and contribute to the local economy – a win, win, win. As a brilliant investor, Mr. Short would have liked that triple return on investment. 82FTCC ANNUAL REPORTTo further scholarship fundraising efforts for deserving students, the FTCC Foundation hosted a Golf Tournament on April 27, 2018, at Gates Four Golf & Country Club, following the previous evening’s Bluegrass & BBQ Silent Auction. To get into the swing of things, FTCC President Dr. J. Larry Keen and Foundation Executive Director Lorna Ricotta welcomed players and guests, thanking them and their sponsors for supporting the college and its students. Teams of four players teed off for 18 rounds and enjoyed the fun and camaraderie. Throughout the game, the players were provided refreshments from the staff and faculty volunteers. After the final hole was played, an awards reception was held to announce the winners who were awarded trophies and prizes.Donors welcomed to annual Golf TournamentUP TO PAR83FTCC ANNUAL REPORTWWW.FAYTECHCC.EDUDONOR CIRCLESThe Donor Appreciation Luncheon is sponsored by the FTCC Foundation to show appreciation to scholarship donors for the support they give to FTCC and the Foundation, as well as to honor scholarship recipients. The annual luncheon was on March 9, 2018, and highlighted two donors, along with one of their corresponding scholarship recipients. The two donor representatives spoke and gave an overview of their respective scholarships. Ms. Gail Riddle, Chair of the Robert H. Short/Cumberland Community Foundation Scholars Program Committee, spoke about Short’s life. The second scholarship spotlight was on the Dr. Hubert E. Batten Endowed Scholarship. Dr. Batten’s daughter, Dr. Jan Batten, spoke on behalf of the family. The Dr. Hubert E. Batten Endowed Scholarship is the Foundation’s largest endowed fund, valued at more than $500,000. Seventeen students received scholarships from the Robert H. Short/Cumberland Community Foundation Scholars Program, and nine students received the Dr. Hubert E. Batten Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Two of those students, Ms. Lanese Dell and Mr. Daniel Higgins, were featured in a spotlight video. Other endowments created this year include the Pamolu Oldham Scholarship Endowment and the Sharlene Riddle Williams Family Endowment at $15,000 each. Mr. John Watson, a family representative on behalf of the Moses Benjamin Watson Memorial Scholarship, also made a check presentation during the event. The Foundation awarded more than $250,000 directly benefiting students for the 2017-2018 academic year.Silver - ($50,000 + ) Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. Dear Friends,On behalf of the Fayetteville Technical Community College Foundation, thank you for your continued support of FTCC, its core mission, and purpose. Established in 1985, the Foundation is proud to provide decades of support in the advancement of FTCC and its students through scholarships, tuition assistance, support for College programs, capital improvements, and other funding to benefit the college and its students. This support is even more important today in the wake of reduced state funding more limited financial aid for the students and the increasing burden of student loans. FTCC is one of our community’s greatest resources and assets. We are able to educate, train, and provide continuing education to our community’s current and next generation workforce through a wide variety of strategic and advanced programs. Some of the programs that FTCC offers include the Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology, Global Logistics & Distribution Management Technology, Culinary Arts, business administration, training for paralegals, nursing, dental hygiene, funeral service, and many more. I would be remiss in not mentioning the close relationship we have with our military, especially Fort Bragg. We are truly grateful to be able to offer multiple programs for soldiers transitioning out of the military and into the workforce by providing them the tools and education to excel in the work community. In mid 2016, FTCC returned to the intercollegiate world by joining the NJCAA Division II program. We have been able to introduce men’s and women’s basketball and golf. This has brought a lot of excitement to an already booming campus. The Foundation’s work and support of these programs would not be possible without the backing of our community, local businesses, faculty, students, alumni and individual donors. If you are interested in investing in the future workforce of our community and FTCC student graduates, please consider joining the Foundation today and supporting our mission. Go Trojans!
